After announcing to Vodafone UK customers the end of free calls and texts to phone numbers in Ukraine on 24 October 2023, Vodafone has decided to extend this support until the end of January 2024. The extension of support comes in response to lobbying from the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Ukraine, a bipartisan group of MPs who support promoting and strengthening relations between the UK and Ukrainian parliaments. Led by Co-Chairs Alex Sobel MP and Bob Seely MP, members of APPG on Ukraine wrote directly to UK Vodafone CEO Ahmed Essam seeking an extension of free calls and texts to Ukrainian phone numbers, support that has been in place since Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The members of APPG on Ukraine welcome Vodafone’s decision to extend this support to UK customers until the end of January 2024, however believe that support should continue until at least until Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office travel advice says it is safe to travel to Ukraine. Alex Sobel MP, Co-Chair APPG on Ukraine, said: We are grateful for this slight extension of support from Vodafone. There are so many people impacted by the ongoing war in Ukraine and they still need this support to keep in touch with friends, family and loved ones in Ukraine. Bob Seely MP, Co-Chair APPG on Ukraine, said: I welcome the extension as it allows those suffering from the effects of the war and separation from the families and friends to stay connected with the loved ones back home in Ukraine. We all understand how important this is.
