Statement from the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Ukraine marking 1000 days since the Russian invasion of Ukraine
The All-Party Parliamentary Group on Ukraine has released a statement to mark 1000 days since the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine (Tuesday 19th November 2024).
Alex Sobel, Member of Parliament for Leeds Central and Headingley, and Chair of the Group, says: “The UK stands steadfastly with Ukraine and its people and will do so until the last Russian troop leaves the territory of Ukraine.
No other country has the authority to negotiate away the territory of Ukraine, and this statement demonstrates renewed support from Parliamentarians in the UK given the evolving international situation.”
Quote from Sarah Green, MP for Chesham and Amersham, co-chair of the Ukraine APPG:
“1000 days is a significant milestone and it’s important that Ukrainians both here in the UK and on the frontline know that we still stand with them, we still support them – our commitment is steadfast and unwavering”.
Quote from David Burton-Sampson, MP for Southend West and Leigh, co-chair of the Ukraine APPG: “Despite the challenges the Ukrainian people have experienced during this war, they have remained resolute in their drive to win and see the back of Putin’s forces on their soil. I am proud of the British people and the way they have stood with Ukraine in their fight for freedom, from people opening up their homes to those fleeing the conflict to the support we have given the Ukrainian military in taking on Putin. We must continue to stand with Ukraine to the end of this war and beyond as they focus on rebuilding their country.”
Full statement:
‘Tuesday 19th November marks 1000 days since the Russian Invasion of Ukraine. The Group has stood steadfastly with Ukraine and its people and will continue to do so until the last Russian Troop leaves the territory of Ukraine.
Ukraine has been fighting bravely and resolutely for freedom and independence for 1,000 days, defending its territory against Russian aggression. This war is not only for Ukrainian land but also for the protection of democratic values, freedom, and international law. The Ukrainian people continue to show incredible resilience that deserves our support.
We are proud that the United Kingdom was the first responder and support of Ukraine and we reiterate the fact that International support is crucial for achieving a just peace. Sanctions, diplomatic pressure, and military aid need to not just be rhetoric but concrete steps to protect not only Ukraine but also the global rules based order. The United Kingdom provides strong support for Ukraine as a key ally in this struggle and the Group will continue to call for more Russian sanctions, sanction enforcement as well as military and humanitarian aid including organising our own aid convoys.
Russia has been shown to violate international law, torturing Ukrainian prisoners and civilians. In the occupied territories deportations, torture, and other brutal actions are occurring. According to the Geneva Conventions, these actions must be investigated, and those responsible must be held accountable. The Group supports the investigations and international efforts in the pursuit of justice.
Ukrainian children have been abducted since 2014 and have become targets of Russian forces—thousands have been deported, and many have lost family and homes. The UK continues to support Bring Kids Back UA initiative which offers hope for the return of these children and their reunion with families. Partner countries are actively participating in negotiations to bring Ukrainian children home. The Group will continue to work across Parliament to support the return of Ukrainian Children.
President Zelensky has put forward a plan with ten key points aimed at achieving comprehensive peace. The formula covers issues such as nuclear security, energy security, food security, environmental stability, and the restoration of territorial integrity. The Group will continue to work across Parliament and with Government to maximise the United Kingdom participation in implementing this plan to make the world a safer place. President Zelensky’s Victory Plan is aimed at ensuring that the war does not last indefinitely and that it ends on fair terms, with Ukraine’s sovereignty ensured and Putin’s plans failed. Russia has shown it is not interested in pursuing peace, we must recommit to an approach where Russia seeks peace and Ukraine’s Victory Plan offers the way to achieve that.
The war has caused a massive humanitarian catastrophe. Millions of Ukrainians have been forced to leave their homes, and thousands have died due to continuous Russian attacks on civilian infrastructure. Hospitals, schools, residential buildings, and energy facilities have become targets of Russian shelling, worsening people's access to basic services. International humanitarian aid remains critically necessary.
Our people have stepped up and opened their homes to Ukrainians and we call upon the Government to continue to support Ukrainians in the UK until such time they can return home without a threat to their lives or properties.
