Shining a critical light on the human abuses ongoing in West Papua this week, with key West Papuan leaders Benny Wenda Chairman of United Liberation Movement for West Papua, who I have worked with for 20 years, and visiting leaders, Reverend Dorman Wandikbo, President of the The Evangelical Church of Indonesia (GIDI), and Reverend Socratez Sofyan Yoman, Chairman of the Papuan Baptist Church Alliance.

I asked the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office an Oral Question whether our Critical Mineral Deal with Indonesia will be amended to include conditions on the protection of human rights in West Papua.
The Government pledged their continuing support for the visit by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to be allowed to visit West Papua. More pressure is needed for the UN to gain access. Since 1963, 500,000 Indigenous West Papuans have died as a result of human rights abuses.
I am hoping to meet with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, to discuss this further.
